I am having a darn hard time though because I have absolutely no endurance when I run. I can't sustain ANY pace, period. I can slow down so far that it's practically a walk, but unless it actually is a walk, I can't seem to do it.
I've tried being really focused on being in tune with my body and I've picked up a few things:
A tendon going up my right front of my calf was killing me
I've experienced swelling and pain in my right foot
I eventually reach a point in the run when my quads and hamstrings poop out
The last observation is totally the most important to me because I think it tells me how I need to train- I need to cross train and build those muscles in order to increase endurance- yay!
Since I decided to drop my running class from my schedule, ( it just didn't work with my schedule and with the dog. Being gone 8am-6pm is too much for my little co dependent friend) I have paired up with a friend and am hoping to use the school's rec center to cross train 2 days a week with her, and do speed work at least once a week on another day ( on the treadmill).
I'm hoping that will help me build up those pooped muscles, which actually, I've never had trouble with before- they've always been over developed but whatever needs to be done, right? I'm running again and exercising regularly and that's what's important!
So Saturday I did my first ever "long run" and decided 5 miles was a good length for me. (Keep in mind I can't actually run a whole mile yet!)
Charlie and I decided to do a new course on a logging trail which I had wanted to try since it's flat and most of our regular route is hilly.
Of course the second we walk out the door it starts pouring. (Sigh). So I went back in, got him a rain jacket, and out we went again. I was feeling retry good but then that calf pain jumped in and I spent a lot of time walking and trying to figure out how to stretch it. We did see some creepy stoners in the bushes in an isolated area which sort of motivated me to speed up a bit!
I had no clue where the trail would lead but it apparently hits a main road down aways and so we crossed the big street and went up a big hill a bit (still maximizing for hills to try and build up my inner thigh muscle!) which is of course when the wind picked up and we experienced the joy of another cloud burst.
My jacket was apparently NOT as waterproofed as I had hoped.
2.5 miles from home and I was really wishing I had someone to come pick me up!!!
We dutifully turned around and headed back and the storm at this point had picked up so I started speeding up. Charlie seemed about done with being wet and I was starting to worry about my watch getting wet. I was running 2 apps on my phone plus the watch and all three said my best pace was around a 7:40 mile which I never would have believed except I saw it on multiple stat reports.
We had ventured 2.5 miles from home, and gone back so you can imagine how bummed I was to see this:
We missed 5 miles by about .25! Bummer. I was going to try and walk to the mailbox and back to hit 5, but as soon as we passed the house, Charlie darted for the stairs. I didn't have the heart to make my poor little wet doggie do another quarter mile and he needed to be rinsed off before he would be allowed to get within 20 feet of my white couches so I dragged him up to a warm bath before I did anything else.
It was about this time I looked at my garmin and I almost cried. The garmin claimed I'd only gone 3.5 miles. I wanted to seriously pitch it out the window. I have no idea what to do. I want this watch to work so badly and it is so sentimental to me since it was a gift but I just don't know ! :(
